Abstract

This paper discusses the economic thought of Imam al-Ghazali, better known as Sufi, philosopher, Kalam expert. Al-Ghazali's thoughts on economics provide predictions of the development of the world economy in the next era. Al-Ghazali has laid down the basic and fundamental foundations and fundamentals of economic problems while still referring to the two inheritance of the Messenger of Allah. Although, economic problems at that time were not as complex as they are today. Muslim scholars, especially al-Ghazali, who were seen as Sufism figures, before the 15th century, had predicted the economic development of the world in the next era. This can be seen from the thought of Al-Ghozali who has contributed to lay down the basic and fundamental foundations and fundamentals of economic problems by referring to the two legacies of the Prophet. Even though at that time, economic problems was not as complex as they are today. Only a few generations of Muslim thinkers developed al-Ghazali's economic thought. These thinkers are including Ibn Khaldun and Ibn Taimiyyah. Meanwhile, the Western thinker who did that was Leonard Lessius, who developed a few important variables that had not been touched by al-Ghazali, such as production costs, the risk of damage to goods in shipping, and some transportation problems which became obstacles.
